A RARE PAIR OF BRONZE FIGURES OF ENTERTAINERS
Han Dynasty
Each block-like figure shown in a kneeling position, one with right hand raised to his ear, the other with right hand extended, wearing simple criss-crossed robes belted at the waist, the hem arched above the feet in back, the face with large mouth, prominent cheekbones and broad, flat nose, the hair drawn up into a simple topknot, traces of gilding on one, both with some green encrustation

Lot Essay

The figure with the raised hand may represent a singer, while the figure with the extended hand may represent a storyteller or perhaps a man playing a game. A very similar figure in the Musées Royaux d'Art et d'Histoire, Bruxelles, is illustrated by C. Deydier, Chinese Bronzes, France, 1980, p. 107, fig. 78.
