A Silver and Bamboo Tobacco Pipe
Meiji Period (Late 19th Century), Incised Signature Natsuo [Kano Natsuo (1828-1898)]
With clear-lacquered cylindrical bamboo shaft mounted in silver, the bowl end engraved with bamboo, the mouth end engraved with a slender shaft of bamboo, and with a five-character inscription
8¼in. (21cm.) long
In wood box inscribed on underside of lid Gin katakiribori senko Natsuo koku kinoe saru shoto Akio shi (silver katakiri engraving by my late father Natsuo, Akio, late winter 1944), sealed Akio
Katakiri is the technique of engraving into metal to simulate painted brush strokes.
