A Bronze Box and Cover
Meiji Period (Late 19th Century), with Signature Dai Nihon Tokyo Ju Baido Shuraku and Seal Bai
Large and rectangular set on four bracket feet with hinged lid opening to the deep interior, cast on the lid in high relief with the sixteen rakan (disciples of Buddha) holding or accompanied by their singular emblems, some finished in silver or gilt or now only copper, the sides of the box cast in lower relief with landscapes including scholars under a silver moon by a river, on the front, and a scholar ascending a mountain path by a silver waterfall on the back, one side panel signed and sealed as on the lid; the interior lined in silver and engraved on the underside with a description and names of the rakan on the lid and the lower interior engraved with a lotus pond, both panels signed and sealed as on the lid; underside with original golden-brown patina
