The rectangular padded back, sides and seat covered in distressed calico, on turned tapering front legs, brass caps and castors, with sabre back legs and castors, the seat-rail strengthened

Possibly supplied to Earl Whitworth, who married the widow of George Sackville, 4th Duke of Dorset (d. 1815), Knole Park, Kent and by descent at Knole until sold by the Trustees of the Knole Estates, in these Rooms, 26 May 1988, lot 59.

Lot Essay

Earl Whitworth, following his marriage to the widow of George Sackville, 4th Duke of Dorset (d. 1815) moved to Knole, Kent much of the furnishings that had been supplied for his London house in Grosvenor Place between 1808 and 1810. Among the furniture listed in the library in 1817 was 'A large easy chair with feather cushion and chintz case', which may possibly refer to this chair (MSS in Centre for Kentish Studies, Maidstone).
