Each with an acanthus-carved serpentine toprail above a pierced Gothic vase-shaped splat, the padded seat covered in close-nailed black horse hair, on square chamfered legs joined by H-shaped stretchers (2)

Lot Essay

The same splat pattern appears on an armchair sold by Thomas and Diane Berger, in these Rooms, 12 February 1998, lot 37. It also appears on a child's armchair, possibly made by Charles Douglas and formerly at Yester House, Scotland (F. Bamford, 'A Dictionary of Edinburgh Wrights and Furniture Makers 1660-1840', Furniture History, 1983, pl. 19).
