The interior enamelled with four clusters of scholars' utensils and flower sprays around a central roundel enclosing the crest and motto LAUS VIRTUTIS ACTIO in grisialle, sepia and gilt, the shallow domed cover similarly decorated below the gilt strawberry finial

Lot Essay

The crest and motto are those of Rawson. See D. S. Howard, Chinese Armorial Porcelain, 1974, p.976, where the author explains that this service is the only one known to have been made for a British family with green 'Fitzhugh-pattern' decoration. He points out that the private English firm of Rawson and Company was one of seven trading at Canton in the 1820s.
