Each piece enamelled and gilt with a central coat-of-arms, crest, coronet and motto LAUS DEO below a band of spear-heads in the well, the border enamelled and gilt in the Meissen style with four cartouches enclosing European ships in harbour scenes, comprising:
A pair of dishes, 13¾ in. (35 cm.) diam.
A pair of dishes, 12½ in. (32.8 cm.) diam.
A pair of dishes, 11¼ in. (28.5 cm.) diam.
A dish, 10 in. (25.5 cm.) diam.
Six plates, one cracked, 9 in. (22.8 cm.) diam.
Nine soup-plates, one cracked, four with minor chips, 9 in. (23 cm.) diam.
Nineteen modern replacement plates
Seventeen modern replacement soup-plates

Lot Essay

The arms are those of Viscount Arbuthnott. See D. S. Howard, Chinese Armorial Porcelain, 1974, p.327. This service, together with another without border panels (ibid., p.439), was made for John, 5th Viscount Arbuthnott.
