Lot Essay

This relatively early sketch by Hunt is a recollection of David Cox and was certainly executed by the artist before he moved away from the influence of his father's friend. Lancaster Sands was one of David Cox's favourite subjects. The artist was fascinated by the precarious relationship between man and the threatening conditions of weather and tide, something that also preoccupied Hunt.
