Lot Essay

The present watercolour was executed during the artist's last years. 'He put into it the affection and artistic mastery of a lifetime, enabling the viewer to enjoy the rolling hills and silvery timbre of the Sussex atmosphere as he must always have enjoyed it' (see The Wide World of Hercules Brabazon Brabazon, loc. cit.). Brabazon's study at Oaklands can be seen on the right of the picture. For another picture of Oaklands, Sussex, see lot 94.
