Lot Essay

This rug is woven with the 'vase' structure which is not what one would expect in a rug of this design. The colours are also not as strong as those normally encountered in vase carpets of the 17th century. These features, and its use but reinterpretation of classical designs, link this rug to two others sold in these Rooms. The first, from the Bernheimer Family Collection of Carpets, used the Mughal waq-waq design (14 February 1996, lot 74), while the other copied a Safavid hunting design (24 April 1997, lot 452). It is thought that these rugs are the product of a workshop probably based in Istanbul at the turn of the century.
