The brick-red field with a variety of palmettes and floral sprays issuing from a central cord, further floral sprays flanking the field, the cusped shaded blue spandrels with rosettes and stylised leaves, a brick-red cross-panel at one end containing polychrome rosettes, in a border of polychrome cartouches containing rosettes and turtle-palmettes between ivory floral octagon stripes, some areas of wear, slight repair and repiling

Lot Essay

While this is in most respects a typical Transylvanian rug, with slightly darker colours than usual, the cross-panel of rosettes seen below the main medallion appears to be without parallel.
