Lot Essay

This rug is a copy of the Von Bode prayer rug in the Islamic Museum in Berlin (Von Bode, W. and Kuhnel, E.: Antique Rugs from the Near East, New York, 1984, p.47). An earlier example to the lot offered here was sold in these rooms on 22 April 1982, lot 116. Another is in the Keir Collection (Sphuler, F.: Islamic Carpets and Textiles in the Keir Collection, London, 1978, pl.28). Both of those are dated to the 18th century. The present rug's Turkish origins are demonstrated by a number of lazy lines within the structure.
