Lot Essay

We are grateful to Nora de Poorter for confirming the attribution to Jordaens from a photograph. She dates the painting to circa 1650-1660 and compares it with another modello for a large painting, The Triumph of Frederick Henry, in the Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten, Antwerp (see catalogue of the exhibition, Jacob Jordaens, Brussels, 1993, I, p. 253, no. A82). She also points out that the yellow circle and the small standing boy in the lower right corner are repeated in another allegory with mythological figures, the Allegory of the Peace of Westphalia (?), in the Nasjonalgalleriet, Oslo (see ibid., p. 275, no. A89).
