Lot Essay

Although a number of paintings by the artist survive, very little is known about his life and career. The great majority of his work, the present picture included, shows a clear debt to Jan Davidsz. de Heem; one dated picture from 1654 is known, almost certainly placing van Deynum in Antwerp in the 1650s.

Offered with a certificate from Dr. Sam Segal, dated 1991, in which he confirms the attribution to van Deynum. He considers the picture probably to have been signed by the artist and the signature subsequently to have been adapted to de Heem's.
