Lot Essay

Both Pilo and Scarpa Sonino (loc. cit.) date this picture to the shortly before 1620. Pilo also pointed out that the central arch and statue recur in reverse in a pen and ink drawing by Ricci in the Royal Collection, Windsor (see G.M. Pilo, Marco Ricci, catalogue of the exhibition, Bassano del Grappa, 1964, no. 155, reproduced). The size of the picture is similar to a Moonlit landscape which both authors suggest may be its pendant (see A. Scarpa Sonino, op. cit., no. 82).
