Lot Essay

The label almost certainly refers to Anne-Pierre de Montesquiou, Lieutenant-Génèral of the French army and Premier Ecuyer to the Comte de Provence, Louis XVI's brother. In 1781, de Montesquiou built a hôtel in Paris designed by the architect, Aléxandre-Theodore Brogniant which stood opposite the écuries of the Comte de Provence. The marquis also had an enormous château at Maupertuis. With his strong connections at Court, he was a natural client for Séné.
