The box of rectangular form with scalloped corners, the oval lid framed by a white and blue champleve enamel scroll decoration, centered by a finely painted multi-coloured enamel lakeside scene with the Mont Blanc in the background, the inside decorated with a painted multi-coloured bouquet of flowers on beige enamel background, opened by a slide in the front revealing a singing bird rotating on its axis, turning its head, flapping its wings and wagging its tail, finely pierced and engraved floral and scroll decorated silver gilt grill, all surrounded by blue, white and black champleve enamel scroll decoration and painted multi-coloured bouquet of flowers to the corners, finely engraved and chased floral decorated sides and bottom plate with keyhole, a hinged panel to the back opened to reveal a key, movement signed and numbered

Lot Essay

Charles-Abraham Bruguier, a renowned singing bird box maker, was born in Geneva in 1788. Today he is credited for having further developed the clarity and quality of the bird's song. His celebrated talents were passed on to two further generations of Bruguier craftsmen.
