British Antarctic Expedition, 1910-1913
George P. ABBOTT. - The Woolsey unshrinkable grey kntted wool balaclava helmet, [circa 1910], 44cm. long, 27.5cm. wide approx., the interior with additional black woolen patches sewn in as extra protection for the ears, with face aperture and two side flaps, with cotton copyright label in red and white.
Provenance: George P. Abbott (B.A.E. Shore party, member of the 'Northern Party'); by descent.
Levick's excellent portrait of Abbott in full sledging gear (see above) shows him wearing a balaclava very similar to the present example, but with the usual addition of a face-guard.
