Shackleton-Rowett Expedition, 1921-1922 (S.S. Quest RYS)
[Sir George Hubert WILKINS (photographer?]. - Kinemette (distributors). A boxed set of tinted film slides and viewer, titled on the lid of the box Shackleton's Last Antarctic Expedition Southward in the "Quest", London: [1922 of later], 53 slides (including 10 duplicates), image area of slides: 1.8 x 2.3cm., the viewer of card with glass and black composition lens, all loose within original black paper-covered card box, half-tone label on upper cover (titled as above), letterpress instruction label mounted on one end, overall: 7.4 x 7.4 x 16.8cm. (Some cockling to the film, some slide-mounts with light damage, box rubbed).
This rare collection appears to have been created from individual stills from the ciné film made of the voyage. The images include 26 views of life aboard the Quest (some including Shackleton), 4 views of whaling operations in South Georgia, probably at Grytviken, 8 studies of birds (4 of the Albatross, 2 of Penguins and 2 of Terns), 4 miscellaneous shots of seascapes, etc. and a fine view of the memorial to Shackleton erected by the expedition members, with them gathered around it: Macklin wrote in his diary for 4 May 1922 'After lunch. Wild took the cross which Dell had made & which Kerr and Smith had secured into a drum, & erected it in the cairn. The cairn with the cross forms a conspicious mark. I think this is as "the Boss" would have had it himself, standing lonely in an island far from civilization, surrounded by stormy tempestuous seas, & in the vicinity of one of his greatest exploits. It is likely to be seen by few, but the few who see it are men who themselves lead hard lives, & who are able to appreciate better than those at home, the work which he accomplished. The cairn was completed on the following day and a roughly cut plaque cemented in place: 'Sir Ernest Shackleton Explorer. Died here January 5th 1922 Erected by his comrades'. (55)
