Lot Essay

The early issues of the young, precocious, and spoiled Caracalla are remarkable pieces of Imperial propaganda. In 196 A.D., when he was only eight years old, Caracalla was created Consul. The next year he was elected member of the pontifical college, and the issues of 197 show him in military dress holding a commander's baton. At the age of ten he was elevated to the rank of Augustus, and accompanied his father to the East. Thus the young boy acquired the title Part. Max., and is here depicted with a Parthian captive at his feet.
