The Santo Family Group "President's Cellar" Sale to Benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters of New York City
The Santo Family Group has an unrivaled reputation for style and fine cuisine, having created a string of successful and critically acclaimed restaurants in New York. They have generously consigned a selection of rare wines to be sold at this sale, the proceeds of which they will donate to Big Brothers Big Sisters of New York City.
On May 26, 1971, Dr. Joseph B. Santo, founder of New York's legendary The Sign of the Dove Restaurant, purchased the "President's [John F. Kennedy's] Cellar", Lot No. 43, at the Heublein Importers' auction held in San Francisco under the direction of J. Michael Broadbent, then the director of Christie's London Wine Department. The President's Cellar, which comprised of fifty-five cases of wine, had been collected by New York's Carlyle Hotel for President Kennedy, and there were only a handful of private collections in the United States equal to it at the time. Every selection, which included Bordeaux, Burgundies, Rhine, Moselle and California wines, has been kept in the collection. The Santo Family Group has donated five lots from the President's Cellar for auction by Christie's New York to benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters of New York City. These rare wines, Lafite Rothschild (1874), Cod d'Estournel (1928), Château Mouton Rothschild (1939), Lafite Rothschild (1949), and Château Latour (1959), share the distinction of having been a part of one of the most preeminent wine collections in American history.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of New York City began in 1914 as the first formalized mentoring program in the United States, providing youth, ranging from 7 to 18 years of age, with one-to-one volunteers. These mentors have a dramatic, positive affect on their "Littles" lives, particularly in regards to school, relationships with friends and family, resistance to drug use and crimes and improved self-esteem.
