Lot Essay

During the historic Olympic games in Berlin in 1936, the young photographer Carla Maria Busch, was one of only two female photographers invited to record the events. Unlike her contemporary Leni Riefenstahl, who was accompanied by a team of assistants, Busch worked alone, often photographing all day and then rushing back to the city to the develop and print that night, only to return to the games early the next morning to capture that day's events.
