Lot Essay

This painting is a rare view of the Dutch countryside inspired by Diaz's visit to Holland in 1838. The figure group in the lower left is based on sketches that Diaz made during this trip. He was also influenced by Dutch 17th century engravings. Before Diaz left for Holland, his works were already begining to show the impact of Théodore Rousseau, whom he knew in Barbizon. Our painting reveals the first seeds of this influence. It is possible that Diaz added the trees in the background after he returned from his Dutch voyage.

This painting will be sold with a photocertificate from Pierre Miquel, and we are grateful to him for his assistance in preparing this catalogue entry.
