Lot Essay

This uniform, and the chapka in Lot 163, are believed to have belonged to Sir Francis Burdett, Bart, who served with the 17th Lancers 1894-1897. He rejoined the regiment from the Reserve in 1900 and fought in South Africa, being severely wounded in July of that year. He later served as ADC to the Govenor of Ceylon from 1901-04. This tunic is made to be capable of being 'buttoned over blue', ie to show the blue face of the plastron.
