General Charles Robert West Hervey, [C.B.], was born in 1818 and entered the Army as an Ensign in 1835, seeing service with the 23rd Bombay Native Infantry in the Expedition to Mangalore and Canara in 1837. Promoted to Lieutenant in 1839, he served with the Scinde Irregular Horse as Second-in-Command and was for some time in command of that unit together with the Belooch Levy in Upper Scinde during 1840-42. Hervey next served with a Wing of his Regiment in Cutch and in command of H.H. The Rao's Horse in the Runn between 1843-44. Appointed Captain in 1846, he served as Aide-de-Camp and Secretary to Sir James Outram in the Expedition to Persia and was present on the march to Borazjoon, the action at Khooshab and the operations at Mohumra in 1857, for which he was appointed Companion of the Bath and a Brevet-Major. Promoted to substantive Major in 1858, his final stint of active service was in the Indian Mutiny when he was present at the relief of Kolapore. Subsequently attaining the rank of General in 1889, his latter appointments included those of the Head of the Thuggee and Dacoite Suppression Department and Chief of the Secret Service Special Department. He died in 1903.
