Gunner Johnston Hughes served in No. 2 Battery, Montreal Garrison Artillery in the skirmish at Trout River on the Huntingdon border in late May 1870, the Fenians losing three men and suffering several wounded. On the basis of this successful action, Hughes afterwards applied for a share of the Fenian Raid Volunteers Bounty in April 1912 and was awarded one of 92 Medals with the 'Fenian Raid 1870' clasp to his unit.
