Captain John Smeeting Herbert was gazetted to the 10th Foot as an Ensign in April 1842 and advanced to Lieutenant in November 1843. Following participation in the First Sikh War, when he was engaged at the Battle of Sobraon, Herbert went on to witness further active service in the Punjab Campaign at Mooltan and 'in an attack on the enemy's entrenched position under the walls of the fortress on 12 September, he received a severe wound from the effects of which he died on 21 February 1849' (Soldiers of the Raj refers). His name appears on the Regimental Memorial in Lincolnshire Cathedral.
