Lot Essay

Thomas Miles was born in St. Marylebone, London in August 1827 and entered the Royal Navy as a Boy 1st Class aboard H.M.S. Rodney in November 1846. Present in operations in the Baltic and Crimea aboard the Algiers, in which ship he served from May 1854 to February 1856, Miles went on to witness further active service in the Gun Boat Leven during the Second China War. Advanced from Leading Seaman to Gunner's Mate in June 1860, he transferred to the Coast Guard as a Boatman in April 1864 and was finally discharged in March 1877.
