Private James McNaughton, who was born in Pitlochry and enlisted at Edinburgh, died on active service with the 1st Battalion, Black Watch on 12.3.1915. Having originally joined the B.E.F. in August 1914, in positions on the Mons - Beaumont road, the Battalion went on to participate in an attack on Sablonnieres in the following month and in a Divisional offensive north of the Aisne. Subsequently assigned to the Ypres sector, in positions near Polygon Wood, 1/Black Watch suffered 'a great number of casualties, being almost overwhelmed'. McNaughton was not among them, surviving until March 1915, the eve of the Battalion's participation in the assault on Auber's Ridge.
