Lot Essay

Sapper F.J. Lewis was awarded the Ashanti Star for his services in the Telegraph Battalion, R.E., and was similarly employed in West Africa between December 1897 and January 1898, the Battalion being employed in the construction of telegraph lines between Lago and Saki, and from Jebba along the Niger towards Lokoja. He was not, however, entitled to wear the 'Cape Colony' clasp for his later services in the Boer War.
