Major Charles Otway Cole Bowen, D.S.O., was born in County Cork in August 1867 and gazetted to the Royal Engineers as a 2nd Lieutenant in February 1888. Advanced to Lieutenant in Feburary 1891 and to Captain in February 1899, he witnessed extensive active service in the Boer War with 1st Field Troop, R.E., between November 1900 and May 1902, and was twice Mentioned in Despatches (London Gazettes 4.5.1900 and 10.9.1901 refer). His D.S.O. was presented to him by the G.O.C. Transvaal and Orange Free State in September 1902. Remaining in South Africa at the end of hostilities, Bowen was promoted to Major in October 1906 and died at King's Hill, near Harrismith in the Orange River Colony in March 1910.
