Lot Essay

The technique of carving a transparent veil was developed by Antonio Corradini (d.1752) for the Cappella Sansevert di Sangro in Naples.
Other Italian sculptors of the late 18th Century and throughout the 19th Century retained this tradition. The English were particularly in awe of the technique with Raffaelo Montí's work triumphing at the Crystal Palace Exhibition in 1851.
