Lot Essay

The present work is a copy after a painting by Jean-Baptiste Oudry dated 1718 in the Musée Carnavalet, Paris. It depicts the Cardinal de Noailles, seen on the bridge, ordering the evacuation of injured people from the Hôtel Dieu following the devastating fire of 27 April 1718. The fire, which began in a boat on the river, largely destroyed the wooden and stone Petit-Pont.
