Vol. I text, comprising half-title, title, dedication, preface 6pp., text pp.(7)-(265), explanation of the plates and list of subscribers pp.(i)-(liii); Vol. II, comprising printed title and 142 engraved plates and maps (numbered 1-141 with plate 4/5 on one sheet, and with plates 20bis and 54bis, plates 12, 88, 131-132, 134, 136-138 double-page, and plate 141 folding), all after the author. (Some leaves slightly browned and spotted; without the portrait found in some copies). Bound in contemporay russia, stamped in gilt and blind (rubbed with wear at extremities, rebacked with modern calf).

First edition, on papier vélin, which according to Brunet I p.599 was suppressed soon after it was published. The engraved plates not only depict events during Napoleon's invasion of Egypt, and views of the country, but also some of the important discoveries made by the scholars who accompanied the expedition. These include the monuments of Luxor and Thebes and elsewhere, and also details of the mummies and accompanying grave goods, and reproductions of the engraved and painted texts found therein. (2)
