Lot Essay

The polychrome arms are those of Cardinal Butz von Rolsperg.

The schwarzlot coat-of-arms is (the Austrian) arms of the Austrian Butz family. The Butz family were created hereditary knights in 1694 by Emperor Leopold I, Barons in Hungary in 1734 by Emperor Karl VI (King of Hungary) and Barons in Austria in 1781 by Emperor Joseph II.

Cf. the similar armorial beaker and trembleuse stand with the same arms sold in our Geneva Rooms on 12th May 1980, lot 102.
