Lot Essay

Although possibly from northern Lancaster County, 1820 census records show no Henley living in that area. According to this record, there was a Christian Henley living in Venango County, an unlikely source for this watercolor, and a Samuel Henley living in Huntington County. This latter and potentially more likely source of the watercolor illustrated here had several male children living in his household. These included two boys under the age of 10 and one boy between 10 and 16, any one of whom may possibly have been Jacob Henley. If this is the case, the probability then exists, that this watercolor may have been executed as a school exercise.
