Lot Essay

This watercolor pictorial appears to retain its original frame. The basis for this attribution lies in the conformity of the lapped corners of this frame to the construction of other Bentz fraktur still in their original frames. In addition, with its striped compass-drawn spheres, the watercolor illustrated here bears close similarity to another Bentz figural pictorial with striped spheres and columns, in its original lapped cornered frame, now in a private collection.

Working in Lancaster County from 1810-1842, Samuel Bentz (1792-1850) was principally a schoolmaster. Formerly know as the 'Mount Pleasant Artist,' Bentz was probably associated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Brickerville, Warwick Township.
