Lot Essay

The sitter's turban appears almost Jahangiri, yet the portrait seems to be that of a real person contemporary with the miniature. Although the majority of these miniatures were done in the 19th century, it is known that some were painted in the late 18th century in Lucknow by British miniaturists in the service of the Nawabs. It is possibly one of these.
