Lot Essay

With their compass drawn flowers and free-hand decoration, this and the proceeding lot are from a known group of boxes attibuted to Lancaster County. A few examples are lined with Lancaster County newspapers dating from 1812 to 1826. A slide lid box in the Winterthur Museum is inscribed with pencil "February 12, 1814,/Lancaster Jonas H..." Barons, p.151.
