Lot Essay

Although Heinrich Bucher was long considered the maker of this type of painted box, recent scholarship suggests that he may have been the owner and not the maker. Comparable forms inscribed with other names or initials and dates suggest and unknown maker working in Lancaster and Berks Counties between 1760-1810.
