A SMALL GRAIN-PAINTED BLANKET CHEST
INSCRIBED JOHN A. FORNEY, PALMYRA, LEBANON COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA, 1800-1820

The rectangular hinged lid opening to an interior fitted with a till inscribed 'John A. Forney Maker of Palmyra Lebanon County' above a grain-painted case with bird's eye and peacock feather decoration, on turned legs with ball feet--13 ¾in. high, 19 ½in. wide, 11in. deep

Lot Essay

John A. Fornery is listed in the tax records of May 15, 1841 for Lebanon County, Annville Township as "residing at the Widdow Forney"; his occupation is recorded as cabinetmaker. Annabel Forney, the widow, is listed as owning 19 acres and the owner of a house of Brick and Stone.

A similarly constructed chest with nearly identical peacock plume decoration is in the collection of the William Penn Memorial Museum, Harrisburg: Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Comission.
