Born in London in 1854, William Arthur Smith Benson was articled to the architect Basil Champneys in 1877. The same year he met Edward Burne-Jones, who was to remain a life long friend, the following year meetin William Morris. in 1880 he bagan setting up his business as a designer and by 1882 he had established a foundry.
