A fine pair of 6-inch (15.2cm.) diameter table globes
by J Newton & Sons, London, circa 1845/1852
The terrestrial with cartouche reading NEWTONS' New & Improved Terrestrial Globe Containing the latest Discoveries. LONDON NEWTON & SON, 66 Chancery Lane and 3. Fleet Street, Temple Bar, made up of twelve hand-coloured engraved gores and two polar calottes, the equatorial graduated in degrees and hours, the ecliptic graduated in days of the houses of the Zodiac with sigils, the prime meridian at 20°W graduated in degrees, the oceans with an analemma and numerous exploratory tracks, mostly those of Captains Cook and Biscoe, the Antarctic showing Capt. J. Weddell reached this point in 1823 and Capt. Ross Jan.y 1841, with partial segments of coastline, the continents delicately outlined in red, yellow or green and showing towns, cities, rivers, mountains, deserts and the Great Wall of China, Tasmania labelled VAN DIEMEN'S LAND, the North and Middle islands of New Zealand labelled respectively Eahei Nomauwe and Tavai Poenamoo (some slight discolouration between gores, very small neat repairs at poles);

Fleet Street, Temple Bar. 1852, made up of twelve delicately hand-coloured engraved gores and two polar calottes, laid to the celestial poles, the equatorial graduated in degrees, hours and minutes, the ecliptic graduated in days of the houses of the Zodiac with sigils, the four colures graduated in degrees, the constellations depicted by mythical beasts and figures and scientific instruments, the stars shown to five orders of magnitude (some very neat redrawing, some small spotting, small neat repairs to poles);
Both spheres with unengraved brass meridian half circle to baluster turned fruitwood column and circular plinth base
