Lot Essay

To the left is the Nieuwe Sjoel, built in 1750-2 after a design attributed to G.F. Maybaum, and beside it the Grote Sjoel designed by Daniel Stalpaert and built by Elias Bouman in 1670-1. The Ashkenazi Synagogues served until 1940 as the main synagogues of the Amsterdam Jewish community. To the far right is the Portuguese Synagogue of 1671-5, designed by Elias Bouman and one of the most celebrated in Europe; its interior was the prototype for numerous synagogues elsewhere.
