Lot Essay

Carting the Ripe Harvest is a smaller version of Harvest, painted in 1865 and in the collection of the Bristol City Art Gallery, England. The scene represented is Harting, Coombe, in Hampshire where Cole's country residence, Coombe Lodge, was located.

For an illustration of the Bristol Art Gallery version, see T. Barringer, The Cole Family: Painters of the English Landscape, 1838-1975, Portsmouth, 1988, plate 3.

Professor Tim Barringer has confirmed the authenticity of the present work.
