1962 FORD THUNDERBIRD CONVERTIBLE
Chassis no. 2Y85Z139908
Silver Mink blue with cream and blue interior
Engine: V8, Holley four-barrel carburetor, 390ci., 300bhp at 4,600rpm; Gearbox: three-speed automatic; Suspension: independent, front coil springs, shock absorbers, rear, semi-elliptic leaf springs; Brakes: four wheel drums. Left hand drive.
In his Fifties & Sixties Ford Buyer's Guide, collector and enthusiast Paul Woudenberg correctly states that Ford's greatest product of the post-1945 collectibles was the Thunderbird, which profoundly influenced succeeding car design. The new car was a big success with an eager buying public and in 1958 Ford introduced the four-seat Thunderbird, built at their new Wixom plant in Michigan and true to fashion, the car won that year's Motor Trend Car of the Year award. By 1961 the Thunderbird had evolved again, now sporting a lower roofline, more dramatic front end and smooth crown line on the fender. The design, by William Boyer, was a success and sales soared. The 1962 cars were identified by three bars mounted sequentially along the rear flanks.
This is a 1962 Thunderbird Convertible that was originally supplied by Dunkirk Motors Inc. having left the factory in January '62. A copy of the original bill of sale from the FMC Wixom plant confirms that the convertible retailed for a basic $4,788 which together with options came to $5,167. These options included a power driver's seat, push button radio, windshield washers, outside mirror and fender shields. Today the car is described as being in good condition which is probably an understatement. In 1994 it was simultaneously overhauled and restored and in 1998 the transmission was rebuilt. More recently a new top was fitted last year. The Thunderbird also has the desirable and attractive Kelsey-Hayes style wire spoke wheels with the genuine knock-off hubs fitted. These handsome early sixties Thunderbirds have a fine following and this car has a lovely history, so it is well recommended.
