Lot Essay

This elegant suite of seat-furniture, delicately inlaid with pewter and contrasting woods, relates to designs for chairs by Gottlieb August Pohle, which were published in 1806. With their intricate and elongated forms, Pohle's designs demonstrate a whimsical aspect of the Viennese Empire style. A closely related set of chairs was sold anonymously in these Rooms, 19 May 1994, lot 198. These chairs were originally part of an important suite of furniture, which was supplied to Palais Auersperg in Vienna in the early 1800s. The suite was probably conceived to complement the remodelling of the palace in the classical style by Heinrich Fischer, which was completed in 1802. (See H. Kreisel G. Himmelheber, Die Kunst des Deutschen Möbels, Mnchen, 1970, Vol. III, figs 346-347).
