Lot Essay

The exuberant floral marquetry decoration of this side table, which consists of a flower-vase surrounded by interlaced acanthus scrolls and heavy swags, is based on a design included in Divers Ornemens de feuillages en forme de Panneaux à l'Usage de Ceux qui exercent le Dessin, which was published by Paul Androuet du Cerceau in the 1650s. A similar combination of floral and ornamental patterns appears on two cabinets attributed to Jan van Mekeren (1642-1732), one of which is at Belton House, Lincolnshire, while the other is included in this sale as lot 250. (R.J. Baarsen,'Mix and match marquetry', Country Life 182 (1988), p. 227, fig. 5).
