Lot Essay

H.M.S. New Zealand (1911-1922) was one of the Indefatigable class of battle-cruiser, laid down in 1909 and which were, in essence, a stretched Invincible class. Along with her sister ship Australia, she was paid for by the Dominions, New Zealand being presented to the Royal Navy and Australia retaining hers. In World War One she served with the Grand Fleet and survived both Dogger Bank and Jutland without casualties, a deliverance possibly aided by the magical powers of the Maori grass skirt and greenstone tiki presented to the ship on her visit to New Zealand prior to war to ward off evil and worn by her captain over his uniform throughout both actions!
