The Naval Review, Spithead, 1814

The "Grand Naval Review" to mark the apparent end of the Napoleonic Wars was held at Spithead on 25th June 1814 in the presence of the Prince Regent and other royal visitors. In accordance with established precedent, the ships of the fleet manned their yards and were reviewed by the Prince Regent from H.M.S. Impregnable. It was undoubtedly a magnificent occasion but in the absence of any flags, particularly the royal standards, salutes or any of the other usual trappings associated with a ceremonial review, it seems more likely that this work was intended merely to record the fleet back in its peacetime anchorage at Spithead. The fact that the ships are anchored in line might indicate that a review is either imminent or has just occurred but this can only be speculation; although undeniably a work of both charm and interest, it would appear that its old title is somewhat erroneous.
